The large-flowered bellflower is native to East Asia, as evidenced by its Japanese name "kikyo". Also called Chinese bellflower, Japanese bellflower or platycodon, its name comes from the word "balloon" representing its buds that swell like tiny balloons before opening.

Embodying unchanging love, honesty and obedience, the bellflower also represents loyalty and fidelity and can be used to symbolize your commitment to someone you care about. This does not only mean romantic relationships, but includes relationships with friends, partners, children, siblings and other significant others.

Kikyo is often used as a pattern to decorate kimonos and Obi, a belt for kimonos. It is a flower that is also found in some family crests ("Kamon" in Japanese) called "Kikyo-Mon".

Finally, the large-flowered bellflower blooms in late summer and is closely associated with the autumn season in Japanese culture.
